Exercise physiologist Luke Morrison talks foot health

As an exercise physiologist and keen runner, the biggest deficits in clients that I see usually start at the feet. And that is because they are the foundations of your body. We walk, jump and land on our feet before force is absorbed further up the body.

The human foot contains 29 muscles and 26 bones! That means we barely scratch the surface with our training. If you want to get the most out of your running or sports, you need to be improving balance, arch support and intrinsic and extrinsic control.

Orthotics, what’s the big deal?
Orthotics provide much needed stability to areas of the foot, redistribute pressure away from areas that may be overloaded and improve comfort.

But, orthotics do not replace weak feet, poor ankle mobility or load management principles. By focusing on increasing range of motion in your ankle joint, intrinsic and extrinsic control and shock absorption - you can build long term resilience to keep doing the activities you enjoy.
